Modeling generalized implicatures using non-monotonic logics
This paper reports on an approach tomodel generalized implicatures using nonmonotonic logics. The approach, called compositional, is based on the idea of compositional semantics, where the implicatures carried by a sentence are constructed from the implicatures carried by its constituents, but it also includes some aspects nonmonotonic logics in order to model the defeasibility of generalized i...
متن کاملNon-Cooperative Pragmatics and Scalar Implicatures
The study of signaling games has traditionally sidestepped the issue of logical structure and treated languages more or less as unstructured bags of words [6, 1]. It would seem, then, that “there is an interface between logic and game theory to be developed here” [9]. Lately, this connection has begun to be made [2, 10], and this note is a contribution to this development. More specifically, I ...
متن کاملScalar Implicatures in Complex Sentences
This article proposes a model for the computation of scalar implicatures in cases where one scalar term is in the scope of another. It shows that a crossproduct of two quantitative scales yields the appropriate scale for many such cases. One exception are cases involving disjunction. Here, it proposes a treatment that makes use of a novel, partially ordered scale for disjunction and capitalizes...
متن کاملBare Numerals and Scalar Implicatures
Bare numerals present an interesting challenge to formal semantics and pragmatics: they seem to be compatible between various readings (‘at least’, ‘exactly’, and ‘at most’ readings), and the choice of a particular reading seems to depend on complex interactions between contextual factors and linguistic structure. The goal of this article is to present and discuss some of the current approaches...
متن کاملProjecting Presuppositions with Scalar Implicatures
I present a system which reconciles free choice permission effect with other scalar implicatures. The core idea is to cluster together alternatives which are obtained by similar transformations of the original sentence (e.g., replacement of a given item with a stronger item). Interestingly, this system can be extended to account for presupposition projection.
